个人简介

Dr. Owen Carmichael received his Ph.D. inRobotics from Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, USA, in 2003. He was apostdoctoral fellow in Radiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centerfrom 2003 to 2005. Dr. Owen Carmichael was a faculty member of the NeurologyDepartment at the University of California, Davis, from 2005 to 2014. He is nowDirector of Biomedical Imaging at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center inBaton Rouge, LA. His research laboratory develops novel biomedical imagingtechniques and applies them to aging, Alzheimer’s disease, and metabolicdisorders. He has received research funding from the National Institutes ofHealth, National Science Foundation, and private foundations in the US.

报告摘要

The development of novel methods foranalyzing brain imaging data is now a significant topic of interest in manystatistics departments worldwide. This activity has been driven by therelatively unique structure and complexity of scientifically-important brainimaging data, together with its widespread availability. This talk willbriefly describe some exemplar research problems in this domain. Additionally,I will describe why rigorous statistical methods in neuroimaging are importantfor public health, using aging-related cognitive decline as a case in point. Specifically, I will discuss what we know and don’t know about thenegative effects of type 2 diabetes and other chronic health conditions on theaging brain, and how novel neuroimaging methods may help to improve ourknowledge. This talk will include discussion of joint work with LudaSakhanenko, Jie Peng, Debashis Paul, Hans Mueller, and Jane-Ling Wang.
